Our family recipe

Traditional Bolo de Mel, or Madeira Honey Cake, is one of the oldest delicacies originating from our family’s homeland, the Portuguese island of Madeira. It’s made with luscious black treacle, or sugarcane molasses, for a smooth, velvety taste and dark richness.

Our family has been making Bolo de Mel for generations, typically at Christmas time, but it can be enjoyed year-round. Bolo de Mel has a shelf life up to 18 months so it’s great to keep in the pantry for when unexpected guests drop by.

The fragrant spices and rich, crumbly texture make it a delight to enjoy. Typically, Bolo de Mel is broken apart by hand, rather than cut with a knife, and is best served with tea or coffee, or maybe a cheeky sweet wine such as Madeira wine or Port.
