Galo de Barcelos

The Galo de Barcelos has become the national symbol of Portugal, standing for honesty, integrity, trust and honour. It's also believed to bring good luck!

Legend has it that a Spaniard, passing through the small town of Barcelos in Portugal, was accused of committing a serious crime. Despite protesting his innocence, he was sentenced to death.

In a last ditch bid for freedom, he asked to be brought before the town's judge. Again he proclaimed his innocence but he could not present any proof in his defense.

The judge was dining with friends, and the Spaniard looked over at a roasted chicken about to be served to the group and declared that if he were innocent the chicken would crow.

Everyone laughed, but suddenly the roasted chicken turned into a tall standing rooster, and began to crow. The judge immediately freed the Spaniard.
